Mass Psychogenic Illness

Mass Psychogenic Illness (MPI), also called Mass Sociogenic Illness,[1] is “the rapid spread of illness signs and symptoms affecting members of a cohesive group, originating from a nervous system disturbance involving excitation, loss or alteration of function, whereby physical complaints that are exhibited unconsciously have no corresponding organic aetiology.”[2] MPI is distinct from collective delusion, also included under the blanket terms of mass hysteria or epidemic hysteria, in that MPI actually causes physical symptoms, though there is no organic cause.
Mass hysteria is cataloged in the DSM-IV as “conversion disorder hysterical neurosis, conversion type.”[3]
